The vintage started out with some uncharacteristically warm weather in March, which gave every indication of an early vintage. However, the weather turned rainy and cold and April was one of the wettest Aprils ever recorded. Vine growth stalled and bloom was delayed. A heat spell in late May and early June caused poor set in many varieties, Merlot being perhaps the most affected. The lower volume ultimately increased the flavor intensity of the reduced crop. Good canopy management prevented sunburn issues during a hot, late summer. The weather then cooled down to more normal conditions and allowed the vines to re-hydrate, giving the grapes time to develop flavor maturity before harvest.
