Region: Bordeaux
Bordeaux is the largest fine wine-making region in the world ? with 284,320 acres of A.O.C. vines ? as well as the most legendary. Its sterling reputation is built mostly on red wines. But Bordeaux doesn't just mean reds. The region also produces a wide range of other excellent wines, including dry and sweet whites, ros‚ and clairet, and a sparkling wine called Cr‚mant de Bordeaux.
The great diversity of microclimates and soils (clay, gravel, chalk, limestone) are ideally suited to Bordeaux's different grape varieties including the Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Merlot.
The richness and elegance of Bordeaux wines is the result of subtle blending of these different grape varieties, combined with centuries of experience, the skills of local winemakers and on-going research by oenologists (wine scientists) and technicians. With 57 appellations, more than 9,000 wine-producing chƒteau, and 13,000 wine growers in the Bordeaux region, you can find sophisticated wines, refreshing wines, aged wines and young wines. Though the top-quality Bordeaux merit the higher prices they command, there is a large choice of wines in every price category.

Chateau Beau-Sejour Becot Grand Cru Classe 2002, St Emilion, France, Bordeaux, red blend, 750ml |
$199.99
|
Chƒteau Beau-S‚jour B‚cot is located on the plateau of Saint-Martin de Mazerat, to the immediate west of Saint-Emilion village,in the heart of the Saint-Emilion appellation. It is surrounded by the most prestigious vineyards of the commune, which counts two "Premier Grand Cru Class‚ A" and eleven "Premier Grand Cru Class‚ B". This classification is unique in that it is revised every ten years.
During the Middle Ages the monks of Saint Martin took over at the Chƒteau Beau-S‚jour B‚cot where the Gallo-Romans had left off eight centuries before. The estate then passed into the GŠres family, who were nobility from the Camarsac area. Over the years the estate changed names. In the eighteenth century it was known as Domaine de Peycoucou - the hill where the cuckoo sings- and it was in 1787, as the wish of G‚n‚ral Jacques de Carle that it became Chƒteau Beau-S‚jour B‚cot. With this name he wanted to leave to posterity the happy memories of his stay there. The ulterior motives were possibly commercial or marketing ones. Although he came from a military background, he was commercially-minded and no doubt saw the advantage in creating an attractive-sounding label. ". G‚n‚ral Jacques de Carle however, had no successor, and after a series of sales and inheritances the estate of Beau-S‚jour fell in 1924 into the hands of Docteur Jean Fagouet, who expanded the vineyard to 10 hectares 5 (about 26 acres). Michel B‚cot, from a wine-growing family settled in Saint-Emi |

Chateau Bel Air Ouy Saint Emilion Grand Cru 2002 750ml |
$59.99

A super value, this deep ruby/purple-colored St.-Emilion offers aromas and flavors not too dissimilar from a top vintage of the famed L'Evangile. Sweet blackberry and wild mountain berry fruit is interwoven with hints of raisins, plums, and white flowers. Medium-bodied and fleshy, with excellent purity and sweet fruit, this is undoubtedly a sleeper of the vintage. As the wine sits in the glass, more black raspberries seem to emerge. Anticipated maturity: 2006-2015.

Chateau Bolaire Bordeaux Superieur Rouge 2003 |
$53.99
|
Although 2003 is Bolaire’s debut vintage, it appears this will be a serious estate for consumers to keep an eye on. Moreover, it will be an original one given the incredibly high percentage of Petit Verdot (27%) planted in the vineyard. The remaining vines include Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Bolaire’s wines are imported exclusively by Lou Kapcsandy. Although light, herbaceous, and revealing jagged, stemmy tannins, the 2003 exhibits surprisingly complex aromatics. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2013.

Chateau Cos d' Estournel 1995, Saint Estephe, Bordeaux, Red Wine, 750ml (95 Pts R. Parker) |
$259.98
|
At one and the same time very concentrated but very tender.
The 1995 is a highly distinguished vintage in which is to be found all the traditional elegance of Cos d?Estournel. Its concentration reflects the extremely dry summer. Maturity: 2005 to 2020.
60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot.
Just like a novel writer can be the same and yet different through his works, a Grand Cru can express the same style through its different vintages.
In the eyes of Great Wines lovers, Cos d'Estournel has become the archetype of a certain style of virile elegance in which power does not exclude either grace or mildness.
Impressive in its youth by the intensity of its structure and the strength of its fruit, the wine of Cos evolves slowly to reach a wonderful melting quality and an aromatic complexity when it comes to complete maturity (between 10 to 30 years).
Great vintages of Cos d'Estournel can have an exceptionally long life, sometimes exceeding a hundred years.
Today, we can still drink some 1870 Cos d'Estournel bottles and find them admirable!

The owner of Chateau Gloria Henry Martin use to be the mayor of Saint Julien. He purchsed some plots of vineyards next to the Chateau from Leoville Poyferre, Gruaud Larose, St Pierre, Duhart Milon. Since the land was sold to Martin the Vineyards were disclassified, but the quality remains the same or even better. Gloria should be at least a 3rd Classified Growth. However this unclassification fact makes this wine an excellent value. It can be aged 15 up to 20 years.
Henri Martin, Gloria's owner and once Mayor of Saint Julien was one of M‚doc's legendary figures. In 1956 he became President of the Interprofessional Committee of Bordeaux Wines. Beginning in the 1940's, Henri Martin assembled the vineyards of Chƒteau Gloria with parcels of land from such neighboring vineyards as L‚oville-Poyferr‚, Gruaud-Larose, Saint Pierre and Duhart-Milon. The property is now run and managed by his son-in-law, Jean-Louis Triaud.Round, generous, rich, long-lasting with cedary and spicy bouquets. The wine of Chƒteau Gloria shows well young, and also ages well. |

Chateau Haut-Bergey 2000, Pessac Leognan, Bordeaux, Red wine, 750ml |
$184.99
|
This superb chateau, dating from the 15th century and situated in the center of L‚ognan, was acquired by Mrs Garcin-Cathiard in the early 1990's. Important renovation works and the construction of three new chais were carried out in order to rehabilitate the domain. The 29 hectares of the estate are not all in production. 21 hectares are vinified in red and 3 in white. The vineyard, exposed due south on a rich slope, benefits from a gravel soil with a clayey-siliceous subsoil, conditions that allow the wine to develop its "finesse" and bouquet.

Chateau l' Evangile 2002, France, Bordeaux, Pomerol, red blend, 750ml - 96/100 Parker |
$579.99
|
This fabulous L'Evangile rivals such recent great vintages as 1998, 1995, 1990, and of course, 1982. With aeration, the thick, unctuous, saturated purple color is followed by scents of blueberries, blackberries, truffles, acacia flowers, tar, and graphite. Full-bodied, with tremendous opulence, intensity, and purity as well as silky tannin and a long, powerful, concentrated finish, with a hint of cocoa/chocolate, I initially thought this was a modern-day clone of the 1975, but now I am not so sure. The 2000 is a prodigious, intense, powerful offering, but the tannins are clearly sweeter than those of the controversial 1975." 96/100 points. (Robert Parker - Wine Advocate - Apr-2003)

Chateau la Conseillante 2000, France, Bordeaux, Pomerol, 750ml Rated 96-100 Robert Parker |
$639.98
|
La Conseillante's 2000 is a profound wine, revealing more concentration than usual. Undoubtedlya fine effort, it boasts a dense ruby/purple color in addition to a spectacular nose of smoke-infused black raspberries and kirsch liqueur. As the wine sits in the glass, the nose builds, offering explosive aromas of new wood, Asian spice, and an exotic hint of incense. Velvety-textured and gorgeously pure, with extraordinary levels of glycerin, low acidity, moderately high tannin, and a multi-tiered palate presence, this fabulous terroir has produced one of the vintage's legends. Anticipated maturity: 2002-2025. Rated 96-100 Robert Parker.

Very pleasant dried cherry and raspberry character, medium body, with fine tannins and a fresh finish. Harmonious. Score range: 85-88 Wine Spectator
This underrated Medoc consistently produces wines of fifth-growth quality. The sleeper 2000 is tannic yet juicy, structured, and intense, with copious quantities of black currant fruit tinged with cedar and damp earth notes. Medium to full-bodied, pure, and classic, it will be at its peak between 2006-2016 88-90 Robert Parker
Chƒteau Lanessan, which has been in the same family since 1793, commands a 264-hectare estate divided into 130 ha of woods, 49 ha of meadows, 45 ha arable land and 40 ha of vines. The vineyard is situated on gravelly hills where the soil is composed of quarternary gravel called ?Garonne gravel? over a subsoil of broken limestone. It is planted to premium grape varieties: 75% Cabernet-Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, 4% Petit-Verdot and 1% Cabernet franc. Winemaking is traditional (more than 20 days vatting) and the wine is being sought more and more every day for its consistently remarkable quality. A certain number of Gold Medals or merit awards have also been attributed to the wine of Lanessan. The Bouteiller family, whose archives are carefully kept at chƒteau Lanessan, also own a museum of The Horse: stables, harnesses and a collection of period carriages from the 1900 era which can be visited in addition to the winery and vineyards (from March 20 until November, daily from 9 to 12 a.m. and 2. to 6 p.m., and |

Chateau Mille Roses Haut 2003 - Medoc 750ml |
$73.99
|
| The deep ruby/plum-tinged 2003 offers up attractive aromas of red and black fruits, forest floor, oak, and loamy soil. With a fine texture, medium body, and abundant sweetness as well as glycerin (no doubt because of its 13% alcohol), it should drink well for 5-10 years. A small, 17-acre vineyard located near the classified Margaux estate of Giscours, Mille Roses merits a look by serious consumers.(Wine Advocate) |

Chateau Yon-Figeac, Saint-Emilion 2002 , France, 750 ml |
$119.99

WA 89 Pts. - A super value, this deep ruby/purple-colored St.-Emilion offers aromas and flavors not too dissimilar from a top vintage of the famed L'Evangile.

Vieux Chateau Certan Pomerol 1999, France, 750ml |
$219.99
|
From the early spring to the harvest, 1999 was a year of gentleness and temperance. Sunshine and rainfall were never excessive, thereby fostering regular, homogenous ripening of the grapes.
On our estate, with its early terroirs, the grapes were harvested over 10 days, from September 13th to 23rd, in excellent conditions. For the third year running, they revealed the supremacy of the Merlot, with its remarkable fullness, depth and aromatic complexity.
Given the outstanding maturity of the grapes, we chose short on-skin fermentation to avoid over-extracting and to preserve the fruit. Our blend is a perfect reflection of the harvest: 85% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc, and only 5% Cabernet Sauvignon.
Today, at the end of its ageing process, the Vieux Chƒteau Certan 1999 boasts all the gifts and promise of a great wine, subtle and distinguished. The deep garnet red colour heralds a magnificent complex nose of violets and black fruit. On the palate, the wine is full and smooth, with jammy fruit, revealing the fine texture of its tannins.
Given its aromatic complexity, refined taste and elegant finish, the Vieux Chƒteau Certan 1999 is reminiscent of the great 1985 vintage, possibly with even more richness. Ideally, wine-lovers should wait 8 to 10 years to allow it to assert itself, and 15 years to reach its full expression, after decanting.
